We got hitched

It took five years, a cancelled resort holiday, the birth of our son, and countless iterations on just how we were going to manage it. Another resort wedding? Elope? Scotland? In the end, we picked Prince Edward Island in the town where my family on my father’s side began in this country four generations ago.

It was cheap and cheerful (but oh, there are bills to pay…) and everyone had a great time, as far as I know. Catered barbecue and home made wine make for a good evening. Our families finally met and drank together. We’re considering moving back to the Maritimes like we always do.

One of the wedding cakes was a rum cake covered in marzipan and topped with wedding daleks from Etsy, as per British wedding tradition. My sister also provided cupcakes from Saint John Cupcake Salon.

Also keeping with the Etsy theme, we ordered our rings from there as well.

When it began, Kerry made her entrance to the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back.

It was a non-religious ceremony. Readings were from So Long and Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams and Christopher Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.”

In my wedding vow, I stole a line from F. Scott Fitzgerald at the end:

Today is about our future and as we go forward together I will stand by you and in the good, the bad, and everything in between. I will do my best to be a good father to James and a good husband to you because I love you and that’s the beginning and end of everything.

We concluded with a hand-fasting ceremony to honour Kerry’s Celtic roots.

And that was it, we were married.

The wedding was as much “us” as we could manage: It wasn’t entirely planned out. We took forever to make it happen and when it did, we got it a bit wrong. Because we always get it slightly wrong.

I told the lad we were now married.

“Are you still Daddy?”

“Yes, I’m still Daddy.”

  1. Congratulations! It sounds like it was lovely and you two look so happy! What was the reading from So Long and Thanks for All the Fish? My fiance and I are trying to write our wedding ceremony now and it’s so hard to find something that really fits both of us.

  2. Hi there. Thanks for dropping a line. Everyone loved your Daleks (although some people needed an explanation).

Here is the reading from So Long and Thanks for All the Fish:

There was a sort of gallery structure in the roof space which held a bed and also a bathroom which, Fenchurch explained, you could actually swing a cat in, “But,” she added, “only if it was a reasonably patient cat and didn’t mind a few nasty cracks about the head. So. Here you are.”

    “Yes.”

They looked at each other for a moment.

The moment became a longer moment, and suddenly it was a very long moment, so long one could hardly tell where all the time was coming from.

For Arthur, who could usually contrive to feel self-conscious if left alone long enough with a Swiss cheese plant, the moment was one of sustained revelation. He felt on the sudden like a cramped and zoo-born animal who wakes one morning to find the door of his cage hanging quietly open and the savanna stretching gray and pink to the distant rising sun, while all around new sounds are waking.

He wondered what the new sounds were as he gazed at her openly wondering face and her eyes that smiled with a shared surprise.

He hadn’t realized that life speaks with a voice to you, a voice that brings you answers to the questions you continually ask of it, had never consciously detected it or recognized its tones until it now said something it had never said to him before, which was,
    “yes.”
