Slate has a piece on Kate Spade’s new uniforms for Delta’s low-cost airline.. The designs themselves are about halfway down the article. Our own flight attendants are overdue for a makeover as the current uniforms are over ten years old. I think the Spade designs are nice, but really would only work on the young and fit. I don’t think they take into account flight attendants of various sizes and ages.
I wonder, though, if there really is a need in this day and age to have the in-flight crew make the cabin look like, in Liz Phair’s words, “a Galaxy 500 video,” as much as it makes the crew look dashingly smart. But with the airline business trendig toward a cheaper, more laid back approach to travel, why bother dressing up in quasi-military, Starfleet uniforms?
