So the missus and I decided to spend Sunday afternoon taking in a film as we were in an Oscar kind of mood. Or we didn’t have anything better to do. Clean the apartment? Do laundry? Yeah, right.
When I was living back in the John, Sunday afternoons were spent watching foreign, independant, and Canadian films at the Saint John Film Society. Those days were often the highlight of my week. There was often very little information about the films, other than “Belgian,” so I went in often pleasantly surprised by what would unfold in front of me over the next two hours. The audience was often university types, but just as often was simply people from all around the city who were just interested in seeing something unique.
Today felt like that. We took the Metro down to the AMC Forum and pretty much decided without much discussion to see Bride and Prejudice.
It is, as you may have guessed, a sort of cross-cultural Bollywood musical adaptation of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice. It is a musical so it’s about as corny as they come – there are more misunderstandings, break-ups, longing looks and downcast eyes than you can shake a dandiya at – but oh, my goodness, those colours! While the film takes place in India, London, and Los Angeles, the scenes set in India, including the early musical numbers are the most vibrant. But it’s similar, in a sense, to Moulin Rouge. If you could accept the garishness of that movie, then “Bride…” will be pretty tame in comparison.
Other than what I used to catch on the multicultural channels on Saturday afternoons, I don’t know a whole lot about Bollywood musicals so I imagine this entry may be considered a diluted version of the real thing. But for all the romantic storylines in this film, there is no still no kissing. Still, I have to admit, I kind of dig some musicals, as does Kerry, so we both liked it.
